Leader in clinical research which focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of inflammatory and immunological lung injury, working to improve understanding of the immunopathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He co-edited Medical Management of Vulnerable and Underserved Patients: Principles, Practice, and Populations (2007), the only reference currently available that focuses on the treatment of poor and minority populations living with chronic diseases. Serves as role model for other physicians and academic leaders who have overcome the challenges. Achievements in medical education and research have been recognized by election to membership in the Institute of Medicine and Association of American Physicians. Secretary-treasurer, American Board of Internal Medicine. Elected member of the National Committee for Quality Assurances. Member, Advisory Council of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Recipient of the American Thoracic Society's Trudeau Medal.
