Odom’s research focuses on building novel nanoscale structures with unique properties and controlling and interrogating their interactions with their environment. She has pioneered a suite of multi-scale nanofabrication tools that has resulted in plasmon-based nanoscale lasers that exhibit tunable color, flat metal optics that can manipulate light at the nanoscale and beat the diffraction limit, and hierarchical polymer substrates that show controlled wetting behavior and stretchable superhydrophobicity. Odom has also invented a class of biological nanoconstructs that are facilitating unique insights into nanoparticle-cell interactions and that show superior imaging and sensing properties owing to their gold nanostar shape.
