Professor of Hematology. Conducts research in hematology with an emphasis on stem cell biology. Improved understanding of the mechanisms of stem cell mobilization and stem cell homing. Showed (with George Stamatoyannopoulos) that fetal hemoglobin can be induced by perturbations of erythopoiesis by cytotoxic drugs, providing the basis for the introduction of cytotoxic drug treatment in hemoglobinopathies.
