Baritone on the operatic stage and the concert platform, known for his interpretations of music from Bach to Mahler to Stephen Foster, Charles Ives, and George Gershwin. Through the Hampsong Foundation, champions American music and the connections between poetry and music, history and culture, research and performance, society and song. Also teaches and mentors younger singers. First New York Philharmonic Artist-in-Residence. Numerous recordings covering a broad stylistic range have won prizes, including the Grammy and the Gramaphone Award, the Grand Prix du Disque, the Edison Prize, and the Echo Klassik.
