Earlier poems have dealt with themes of love, death and the artistic act; with persons and relationships, places and objects, seen against the world's processes of growth and extinction. Later poems deal more with Irish subjects and are more concerned with questions of value and order, seeing the human function (in so far as it is not simply to survive the ignominies of existence) as the eliciting of order from significant experience.
