Leader in public economics and political economy. Work on the effect of term limits on politician behavior has been widely influential in economics and political science. Studies on citizen-candidate models has provided one of the foundational models of political competition. He was one of the first economists working on the effects of political institutions and politician incentives on selection of politicians, and this work has now also become widely respected. More recently, he has been working on understanding the role of state capacity and economic development. Past co-editor, American Economic Review. Served as external member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee and currently serves as a research fellow, Institute for Fiscal Studies. Program member of the Institutions, Organizations and Growth Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Recipient, Yrjo Jahnsson Award of the European Economics Association.
