Kolve's research focused on medieval literature and its relation to the visual arts. He wrote on medieval religious drama, both in the liturgy and the streets of the medieval town, as well as on Chaucer's use of iconographic traditions in shaping his poetic narratives. His research focused particularly upon medieval visual imagery, and he issued book-length studies of three traditions central to both religious art and drama: the resurrected Christ shown as both gardener and pilgrim; and illustrations to the psalm The fool hath said in his heart: there is no God.
