Made deep, fundamental contributions to particle physics. He was one of the authors of the Callan-Rubakov mechanism for monopole-catalyzed proton decay. He and his collaborators proposed the standard mechanism for baryogenesis in the early Universe. Far ahead of time, he pointed out the possibility of large extra dimensions. One of the few scientists of international stature to stay in the country, he is currently one of the most vocal proponents of science in Russia. Recipient of Pomeranchuk Prize (2003), Solvay Chair in Theoretical Physics (2009), and the Julius Wess award (2010).
