Vikram Sudhir Deshpande
Vikram Deshpande is Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He has also served on the faculties at the University of California, Santa Barbara and at the Technical University of Eindhoven. His research interest include mechanical behaviour of materials; metallic foams and cellular materials; mechanics of asphalt; discrete dislocation plasticity; and fatigue of a single crystal. His innovations have helped define modern solid mechanics, with significant contributions that are both practical and conceptual, from micro-architectured materials to computational tools.
His recognitions include the 2020 Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics, the 2022 Prager Medal, the 2022 ASME Koiter medal, the 2024 Bazant medal ASCE, the 2025 European Solid Mechanics prize and ASME Nadai medal. He has been elected Fellow of the Royal Society, London, the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering, and an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids.
