Harry Pratt Judson Distinguished Service Professor. Invented the moduli spaces of elliptical models and shtukas. Used them to prove the Langlands conjecture for the general linear group of order 2 over functional fields. Later, suggested the Geometric Langlands program. Work on quantum groups and quasi-Hopf algebras revealed connections between the Yang-Baxter equation, arising in physics, representation theory, and tensor categories. Awarded Fields Medal in 1990.
