Research has concentrated on ancient Greek philosophy, including history of science, on the interrelations of the Ancient Near East with early Greek civilization, and on Pre-Christian religions in the perspective of anthropology. This has led to problems of human evolution, of biological foundations for cultural rules, and especially of the origins of sacrificial ritual in hunting behavior.
