Research Professor University of California, San Diego. Research centered on geophysics with emphasis on oceanography. He worked on geophysical effects on the rotation of the Earth. He introduced a new method of tide prediction, and the role played by tidal dissipation in deep ocean mixing. He and Carl Wunsch developed Ocean Acoustic Tomography as a means of monitoring ocean variability on a large scale. In his final research, he interpreted satellite images of the ocean surface.
