Research centers on geophysics with emphasis on oceanography. He has worked on geophysical effects on the rotation of the Earth. he introduced a new method of tide prediction, and the role played by tidal dissipation in deep ocean mixing. He and Carl Wunsch developed Ocean Acoustic Tomography as a means of monitoring ocean variability on a large scale. Recently he has interpreted satellite images of the ocean surface.
