Made seminal contributions to the structure and function of membranes and membrane proteins by development and application of spin labeling technology. His discovery of membrane fluidity and fluidity gradients and the development of site-directed spin labeling for determination of protein structure and dynamics opened new fields of investigation in biophysics.
