Clausen's chief interest was in Latin and Hellenistic Greek poetry and in the relation of the two. He was also interested in MSS and textual criticism and have edited Persius and Juvenal for the Oxford Press. In his later years he wrote on Virgil's Aeneid, an extensive revision of his Sather Lectures (1982, published 1987) and the schola of Persius.
