Photographer. His 1976 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art seismically changed modern photography. His use of color and his recording of his native South, its mores and abandonments rank highest in accomplishment and influence. His camera becomes the most expressive yet passive viewer creating a truly American photographic vision. Recipient of the Getty Images Lifetime Achievement Award.
