Research focuses on optical studies of individual molecules in crystals, polymers, and biomolecular environments. He demonstrated the first optical detection and spectroscopy of a single molecule in a condensed phase system. This work has opened a whole new area of research in exploring the environments and unique behaviors of individual molecules, unobscured by ensemble averaging, thus making possible extraordinary developments in studying large biomolecules.
