Charles and Mary Ferkel Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science, and Applied Physics. Computational and theoretical chemist. Introduced Generalized Valence Bond method and use of ab initio pseudopotentials for quantum mechanical calculations on molecular and solid-state systems. Enabled results from quantum mechanical calculations to be used in molecular dynamics simulations for first-principles predictions of structures, properties, and reactivity of chemical, materials, and biological systems. Applied methods to explain and design new materials and processes involving catalysis, fuel cells, nanoelectronics, membrane proteins, and pharmaceuticals. Honors include NASA Space Sciences Award (2000) and ACS Award for Theoretical Chemistry (2008). Member of the National Academy of Sciences (since 1984).
