Murray A. Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and University Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard University.  Specializes in Islamic studies and comparative history of religion. Publications include Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (ACLS book prize), Beyond the Written Word, and Islamic and Comparative Religious Studies. Directed Harvard's Center for Middle Eastern Studies, chaired Dept. of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, chaired Committee on the Study of Religion, served as Master of undergraduate residential college (Currier House) and as Dean of Harvard Divinity School.
