A premier scholar of cultural ecology, he has transformed our understanding of environmental and material conditions in the pre-European Americas, providing new foundations for interdisciplinary analysis. His research has examined the intensive agricultural bases of Amazonia and Andean societies, demonstrated the large size of prehistoric populations, and documented the scale of landscape change induced by native Americans.
