Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. After early theoretical work in the areas of gas-phase molecular relaxation and photochemistry, he became a leader in the 1980s and 1990s in the then-emerging field of complex fluids and soft matter. In 2003 he started a laboratory to study simple viruses as physical objects, both in vitro and in vivo, contributing key ideas to our current understanding of genome packaging and delivery in the life cycles of DNA and RNA viruses.
