President Emeritus. President of the University of Washington from 1979 to 1995. His 16 years of service is the longest term of any president in the history of the university. Oversaw its greatest growth while winning praise for elevating the school to the highest ranks of academic excellence. Chancellor, University of Illinois (1978-1979); Executive Vice Chancellor, University of California, Los Angeles (1975-1977), and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Occidental College (1972-1975). Has remained active in the civic life of Seattle and the University of Washington, as well as a Trustee of the Gates Cambridge Trust (Gates Scholars Program, University of Cambridge).
