Research centers on the molecular control of gene expression and gene structure rearrangements. He pioneered the first determination of a DNA sequence that controls gene expression. His incisive work on the mechanism of genetic transposition has now yielded the first molecular structure of a transposase-DNA complex. This latter study is a model for understanding how DNA molecules are rearranged in nature and how the HIV-1 genome is integrated into human DNA.
