Yanan Shen

Yanan Shen is a professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His research combines global field campaigns with laboratory studies to advance our understanding of Earth history, in particular, the dynamic interactions between life and the environment. He is especially well known for doing a vast territory of science, from his reconstruction of Earth’s earliest history to investigation of air pollution and its impacts on human health in China. His work on mass extinctions has documented oceanic and atmospheric drivers, highlighting the fragility of the Earth system. This perspective is increasingly important for assessing our present impact on the environment and shaping our understanding of the planet’s future.
