After the cloning of the Shaker gene, he continued to collaborate with Lily Jan to study potassium channels and to elucidate basic mechanisms of neural development. Besides characterizing cell fate specification by different proneural genes, they pioneered the study of asymmetric cell division and the genetic dissection of dendrite morphogenesis.
