The American Academy’s quarterly journal, Dædalus, has released its Winter 2009 issue, Reflecting on the Humanities. The issue coincides with publication by the American Academy of the Humanities Indicators, the first comprehensive data set about the humanities in America.

This online data set – the first of its kind – attracted extensive attention in the news media and in the blogosphere and the website received more than 250,000 hits originating from 38 countries. The prototype includes 74 indicators and more than 200 tables and charts.

The Internet had an unprecedented role in the 2008 Presidential election and rewrote the rules of grassroots campaigning. On Feb. 6, 2009, Sidney Verba, the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor at Harvard University and Fellow of the American Academy, visited the Academy to discuss political equality in America and the many ways the Internet contributed to the campaign and 2008 election.

Tom Cech (Howard Hughes Medical Institute) will present the recommendations of the American Academy’s ARISE report to members of Congress and their staff at a Capitol Hill briefing organized by the American Chemical Society.

Randy Schekman will present the recommendations of the ARISE report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
