Fellows of the American Academy Appointed to Senior Positions in the Obama Administration

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a presidential election in which many Fellows of the American Academy played pivotal advisory roles in the campaigns of both major party candidates, at least eight Academy members have been selected for senior roles in President Barack Obama’s administration. They include:
  • Steven Chu (University of California, Berkeley; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
    —Secretary of Energy
  • John Holdren (Woods Hole Research Center; Harvard University)
    —Assistant to the President for Science and Technology; Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
  • Elena Kagan (Harvard Law School)
    —Solicitor General
  • Eric Lander (Broad Institute)
    —Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
  • Jane Lubchenco (Oregon State University)
    —Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • Lawrence Summers (Harvard University)
    —Director of the National Economic Council
  • Cass Sunstein (Harvard Law School)
    —Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs
  • Harold Varmus (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center)
    —Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

Two Academy Fellows completed their terms as members of President George W. Bush’s cabinet: Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
