Bruce Western, the Bryce Professor of Sociology and Social Justice and Co-Director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University, led a discussion about the empirical and ethical challenges of mass incarceration. He is Principal Investigator of the Square One Project to re-imagine the foundations of criminal justice policy in America, and author of the recent book, Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison.

Western, with coauthor Becky Pettit, wrote the noteworthy 2010 Daedalus essay “Incarceration and Social Inequality” included in the issue On Mass Incarceration of the Academy's journal. The essay, which is online in its entirety, is one of the most read Daedalus essays. This event provided an opportunity for Western to reflect on what has and has not changed one decade later.
