Academy’s Humanities Indicators Cited in “Dear Colleague” Letter

More than 80 members of Congress have written a letter urging their colleagues on the House Appropriations Committee to fully support the National Endowment for the Humanities, including funds to “collect, analyze, and disseminate statistical information on the state of humanities through Humanities Indicators.”

The “Dear Colleague” letter, which was organized by Congressmen David Price (D-NC) and Thomas E. Petri (R-WI), co-chairs of the Congressional Humanities Caucus, and signed by a bipartisan group of House members, states that the requested level of funding for NEH will “help offset mounting economic pressures on the academic workforce and humanities institutions, as well as strengthen the nation’s infrastructure for humanities education and research for the long-run.”

The Humanities Indicators is an American Academy project that provides statistics about areas of concern to the humanities community, including K-12 education, undergraduate and graduate education, the humanities workforce, research and funding for the humanities, and the humanities in American life beyond the academy.
