Alexander Monge-Naranjo

Alexander Monge-Naranjo is a Vice President, Senior Economist, and Team Leader of the Macroeconomics Group in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Before joining the Atlanta Fed, Dr. MongeNaranjo was a Professor at the European University Institute, where he served as Director of Graduate Studies and subsequently as Head of Department. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at Emory University, teaching and advising students in the Ph.D. program. He served as a Research Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and held faculty positions at Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University, and Washington University in St. Louis. He has held Visiting Professor positions at the University of Tokyo, the University of Chile, the Universidad Católica de Chile, the Universidad de Costa Rica, INCAE Business School, Freie Universität Berlin, Goethe Universität Frankfurt, and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has also served as an external consultant for the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the InterAmerican Development Bank, and the International Labour Organization. Dr. MongeNaranjo’s research spans macro economics, international economics, growth and development, and the economics of education. He is among a select group of economists to have published in all four of the discipline’s most prestigious journals: American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Econometrica. His active research agenda covers geography and intergenerational mobility, technology adoption, labor market polarization, income distribution, and global financial imbalances. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Costa Rica, his Master’s degree from the Universidad Católica de Chile, and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1999.
