Arthur Elliott Levine
Arthur Levine became President of Brandeis University in 2024, continuing a career dedicated to advancing higher education and building institutions to fulfill their mission and benefit society. A 1970 Brandeis graduate, Levine is known as a transformational leader and is a nationally sought expert and researcher on addressing the challenges facing colleges and universities. Serving as President of Teachers College, Columbia University, from 1994 to 2006, he focused the school’s mission on closing the equity gap in American education, launching what became the Center for Educational Equity. He also oversaw a successful capital campaign, significant campus investments, and academic department reorganization. From 2006 to 2019, he was President of the former Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. During his tenure, the Foundation launched a fellowship program collaborating with 31 universities to recruit and prepare STEM teachers for careers in highneed schools. Previously he served as President of Bradford College in Massachusetts, chaired the Higher Education Graduate Program and the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and authored 13 books in higher education. The latest, From Upheaval to Action, was published in March 2026. He has been featured in national media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Levine, who earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, has been honored with Carnegie, Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships and 26 honorary doctorates. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006.
