Patricia Albjerg Graham Professor of Education. Educational psychologist focusing on the application of linguistic research to educational policy. Investigated child language in its social and pragmatic dimensions to illuminate problems of educational significance, such as adult-child speech, bilingualism, vocabulary development, and classroom literacy. Organized the use of CHILDES, the child language data exchange system; led the National Academy of Sciences panel on preventing reading difficulties in children and the Department of Education's panel on research priorities in literacy. Wrote about language and literacy in Preparing Our Teachers: Opportunities for Better Reading Instruction (2002).
