David J. Chard

David J. Chard is Professor Emeritus of Special Education at Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. Previously, Chard was Dean of BU Wheelock and President of Wheelock College before its merger with Boston University. He was also founding Dean of the Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Chard has published more than 100 articles, monographs, book chapters, and books. He is a member of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities and has served in leadership roles in numerous professional organiza tions. Prior to his career in higher education, Dr. Chard was a classroom mathematics and science teacher in California, Michigan, and in the U.S. Peace Corps in Lesotho in southern Africa. In 2011, Chard was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Board for Education Sciences and served two consecutive terms in addition to chairing the board. He is coauthor, with Mary Churchill, of When Colleges Close: Leading in a Time of Crisis (Hopkins Press, 2021).
