Jim Sandman is Distinguished Lecturer and Senior Consultant to the Future of the Profession Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law. He is also President Emeritus of the Legal Services Corporation, which he served as President from 2011 to 2020. From 1977 to 2007 he practiced law with Arnold & Porter LLP and was the firm's Managing Partner for a decade. From 2007 to 2011, he was General Counsel for the District of Columbia Public Schools, under Chancellor Michelle Rhee. Sandman served on the District of Columbia Bar Board of Governors from 2003 to 2008 and was President of the District of Columbia Bar during 2006-07. He is Vice Chair of the District of Columbia Access to Justice Commission. He is a member of the American Law Institute and the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board and serves on the boards of the Pro Bono Institute, Washington Performing Arts, Albany Law School, and the College of Saint Rose. He is a former law clerk to Judge Max Rosenn of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
