Jeffrey Cohen

Jeffrey J. Cohen is Dean of Humanities and Foundation Professor of English at Arizona State University. In his administrative role he is charged with ensuring humanities engagement across an accessbased research university with a diverse population. Through his work for the Modern Language Association, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Humanities Alliance, he also works to foster vibrant humanities study nationwide. Cohen’s research examines strange and beautiful things that challenge the imagination, phenomena that are alien and intimate at once. He is widely published in the fields of medieval studies, monster theory, and the environmental humanities. His book Stone: An Ecology of the Inhuman received the 2017 René Wellek Prize in comparative literature from the American Comparative Literature Association. In collaboration with Lindy ElkinsTanton he cowrote the book Earth, a reexamination of our widest home from the perspectives of a planetary scientist and a literary humanist. Next year the University of Minnesota Press will publish Monster Theory at 30.
