Nan Heald

Pine Tree Legal Assistance

Nan Heald is the executive director of Pine Tree Legal Assistance, and has served in this post since 1990. In that time, she has tried to make ease of access via technology a priority, and in 1996 created www.ptla.org, which was the first legal aid site to include self-help resources. She also worked to create StatesideLegal.org as a resource for military and veteran families in need of legal help. She began her career in Washington D.C. as a special assistant U.S. attorney, then going into private practice before joining Pine Tree Legal as a staff attorney for their Native American unit. She has served on the Legal Services Corporation Pro Bono Task Force, the Maine Judicial Branch’s Advisory Committee on Fees, and the Advisory Committee of Providers to Maine’s Justice Action Group. In 2011, she was honored by the White House as a Champion of Change. In 2015, she earned the American Bar Association’s Grassroots Advocacy Award and became a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation this year.
