Henderson was the founding co-director of the Business and Environment Initiative at Harvard Business School. She is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Henderson is an expert on organizational and strategic responses to large-scale technical shifts, particularly in regard to energy and the environment. She studies the dynamics of competition over time and the ways in which technological shocks impact the incentives and capabilities of established firms, focusing on persistence in patterns of behavior. Earlier, she was the Eastman Kodak Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where she taught courses in strategy, technology strategy, and sustainability from 1988 to 2009.
