What are the Challenges and Opportunities of AI in Mental Health Care?
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming mental health care, from chatbots offering support for anxiety and depression to predictive tools helping clinicians identify risk earlier. As these technologies grow more advanced and accessible, they also raise urgent questions: Are they safe? Are they effective? And what are the ethical and societal stakes?
To explore these topics, the Academy’s AI and Mental Health Care project has been convening an interdisciplinary steering committee for the last 18 months. The cochairs of this project include Paul Dagum (Applied Cognition), Sherry Glied (NYU), and Alan Leshner (AAAS Emeritus). This event marks the release of the project’s final product, which aims to foster deliberative discourse and serve as a foundational scholarly agenda to guide future researchers, policymakers, and practitioners on the topic of AI in mental health care.
Join the Academy for a dynamic discussion with leading experts on how AI is reshaping mental health care and what we need to consider as it does.
