Artificial intelligence is quickly changing the mental healthcare landscape for people and providers, raising questions about how these tools should be evaluated, and regulated.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the American Psychological Association, convened two virtual webinars to examine these questions.
- The May 2026 discussion, “How Can Tech Companies and Practitioners Work Together to Safely Provide Mental Health Care Using AI?,” was moderated by Adrienne Stith (American Psychological Association) and featured Paul Dagum (Applied Cognition) and Leanna Fortunato (American Psychological Association).

- The June 2026 discussion, “Can Regulation Keep Pace with AI in Mental Healthcare?,” was moderated by Alan Leshner (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and featured Kacie Kelly (Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute), Aubrey Shick (Launch & Logic), and Vaile Wright (American Psychological Association).

Across the two conversations, panelists considered how unclear definitions, uneven evidence, and rapidly evolving technologies complicate efforts to ensure that AI-supported mental health care is safe, effective, and appropriately regulated.
