All the counts, percentages, and averages included in the narrative below are estimates generated from data collected for the third round of the Humanities Department Survey (HDS 3). The survey response rate for American studies departments was 51%. (For more on how to interpret the results, see the Introduction in the complete profile for this discipline.)

American studies departments and programs were included for the first time in the 2017 survey, with a sampling frame developed from a list of institutions that awarded an average of at least one degree in each of the previous five years and a mailing list provided by the American studies Association. For the analysis that follows, the term “department” is used for each degree-granting unit, regardless of whether it is treated by its institution as a program or department.

In fall 2017, 165 departments were granting degrees in American studies.
