All the counts, percentages, and averages included in the narrative below are estimates generated from data collected for the third round of the Humanities Department Survey (HDS 3). The survey response rate for anthropology departments was 59%. (For more on how to interpret the results, see the Introduction in the complete profile for this discipline.)

This was the first time the discipline of anthropology was included in the HDS, with a sampling frame developed from a list of departments supplied by the American Anthropological Association. Like some of the other disciplines surveyed, a portion of the work done in anthropology departments falls into the HI’s definition of the humanities, while a substantial portion is more properly aligned with the social sciences. The HDS did not ask respondents to make such a distinction. Data was requested for the whole of each department.

In fall 2017, 427 departments were granting degrees in anthropology.
