Chief interests are the history and philosophy of science, the physics of matter at high pressure, and the study of career paths of young scientists.  Among his books are Thematic Origins of Scientific Thought,  Science and Anti-Science, Einstein, History, and Other Passions, and  The Scientific Imagination. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Philosophical Society, and Fellow of several learned societies in Europe. He is founding editor of the quarterly journals, Daedalus as well as Science, Society and Human Values.
