American religion historian and theologian. Directed the Academy's Fundamentalism Project and co-edited a five-volume work growing out of it (University of Chicago Press). He was co-founder and first president, and is now senior scholar-in-residence, of the Marie Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith & Ethics.
