Neal Lane is Malcolm Gillis University Professor Emeritus and Professor of Physics and Astronomy Emeritus at Rice University; he holds an appointment as Senior Fellow in Science and Technology Policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. He served in the federal government as Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy from 1998 to 2001, and as Director of the National Science Foundation from 1993 to 1998. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1994. He has served as Cochair of the Academy’s Council and Cochair of the Academy’s Initiative for Science, Engineering, and Technology.
